"But that she should get it!" cried Durban, shaking impotent fists in the air, "after all she has done. And I can do nothing to force her to be fair. Who would have thought the foul old thief would have squandered his gold on her silly face? I could----" Here he caught sight of the frightened looks of Beatrice, and let his hands fall. As he walked past Vivian towards the kitchen, he breathed a sentence in the young man's ear. "She may know much," said Durban imperatively, "but not all."

"Great Heaven! Could I tell her all, do you think?" groaned the man.

Beatrice caught the drift, if not the exact words of these whispers, and came towards Vivian. Durban was already within the kitchen, and had shut the door. The two were alone--she eager to know the worst; he silent, and tortured with much that he could not explain. "Vivian, Vivian," she continued, and laid her hand on his arm. He shook it off with a shudder. "My dear!" said Beatrice, shrinking back; "oh! my dear," and she stared with fast-locked hands.

"Not that," whispered the man, with dry lips. "You might have called me so when we stood under the Witches' Oak, but now"--he made a despairing gesture--"that is all at an end."

"Do you take back your proposal of marriage?" asked the girl, colouring.

"I do, because I must."  would have given his life to take her in his arms--as was, indeed, the case. "If I did not love you so much," he said hoarsely, "I would lie; but loving you as I do, I must speak the truth."

"The whole of it?" she asked bitterly.

"So much as I may tell Miss Hedge."

"Miss Hedge?"

"I have no right to call you otherwise now," said Paslow sadly. "I told you of a bar which prevented my asking you to be my wife?"

"Yes; and you said that it had been removed."

"I was wrong. It is not removed. I had no right to speak."

"What is this bar?"

 Chicken Breast with Fresh Sage Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article 

Author Notes: I am adding this chicken recipe because it goes so well with the Lemon Risotto recipe that I posted. Moreover, it is so easy with tons of lemony flavor. This recipe is also from Trattoria by Patricia Wells.

Serves 2-4

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts or chicken cutlets
3 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
28 Fresh sage leaves
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Marinate chicken with the lemon juice, sage and olive oil for 30 minutes. The lemon here both flavors and tenderizes the chicken.

After 30 minutes remove chicken and pat dry. Strain marinade and put aside. Reserve sage leaves separately and put aside.

In large skillet, melt butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil until hot and bubbly. Add chicken breasts smooth side down and cook until evenly brown...about 5 minutes (cooking time will be much less if you are using cutlets).Turn breasts over and season generously with salt and pepper. Tuck reserved sage leaves around the chicken and cook until chicken is browned on the bottom but still juicy... about 5-10 minutes more. Do not scorch the sage.

Remove chicken to platter and season second side with salt and pepper. Scatter sage leaves on top and also add lemon wedges to plate. Cover loosely with foil. Discard any fat from skillet. Add reserved lemon marinade into skillet on high heat. Reduce to a glaze...add tablespoon of butter and pour over chicken. Serve asap. Yummy.

 Raspberry Lime Yogurt Tart Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article 

Author Notes: I was looking for lighter dessert recipes this summer when I created this tart. It is versatile because you can trade raspberries for another type of berry. It is light, full of flavor and very refreshing.

Serves 8

1 1/4 cups graham crackers, crushed
1/4 cup chopped nuts
5 tablespoons melted butter
2 cups non fat greek yogurt
2 tablespoons honey
1 zest of a lime
1 pint raspberries

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In large bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs, nuts, and sugar and mix well. Add melted butter and mix until all crumbs are coated.
Press into 9? tart pan with removable bottom. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes until crust is set. Let cool and fill.
Stir honey and lime zest into yogurt. Pour into crust and top with raspberries.

 Lemon-Mint Peas with Burrata and Breadcrumbs Alerter l'administrateur Recommander à un ami Lien de l'article 

This is a cheats spring meal in that two of the three main ingredients (peas and breadcrumbs) are frozen Dermes... but when the peas pop in your mouth with the fresh lemon and mint and you mix the creamy burrata with the crispy breadcrumbs, I promise it'll satisfy all your spring cravings. I use homemade breadcrumbs for this recipe, if you don't have any on hand, just blitz a hunk of stale bread in a food processor. (less) - Lily Hughes

Food52 Review: Fresh tasting comfort food. Some might think it a dichotomy but this recipe proves that it actually is that easy being green Dermes. This will go into my regular weeknight rotation (although I might occasionally "cheat" and use panko in a pinch!)

Serves 2

1 handful mint
1 lemon
1/2 bag frozen peas
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 pinch chili flakes
Salt and pepper
8 ounces burrata

Coarsely chop the mint and juice the lemon. Steam or microwave the peas.
Once the peas are cooked, remove them from the heat and mix in a bowl with the butter, mint, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Drizzle olive oil in a small pan. On a medium heat, toast the breadcrumbs with the chili flakes until crispy. Lightly season with salt and pepper Dermes.

Pour the peas into a serving bowl and place the burrata in the center of the peas. Scatter the breadcrumbs over everything and eat immediately.
